Is there such a thing as an elephant man or woman?

I saw a movie once about an elephant man. I wonder if that can be. There is a lady I see from time to time that has a very large foot and also some kind of a large lump on her forehead ( she wears scarves so it's there but we do not see it. I think it is some kind of disease, wouldn't it be ?

Is there such a thing as an elephant man or woman?
His name was Joseph Merrick. It's said that he was a really nice guy. Sad story- read more about him here:
Reply:it is a disease, mostly exclusivly in thrid world countries type into google images elephant disease
Reply:yes, the elephant man was joseph cary merrick, he lived in the 19th century in england and I believe his disease has been found out to be "proteus syndrome"
Reply:i would of made that guy prime minister, cause his looks wouldnt of gotten him anywhere socially except just for natural pitty from the rich
Reply:no its just a defect. ive seen her too
Reply:Yes it is a real disease. It is genetic. My neurosurgeon thinks that I may have it. There is no cure but mine is not bad. It is basically fatty tumors that come up on your body. I have some on my legs and one on my shoulder. But they are not noticeable. I would have to point them out to you. Hope this answers your questions.
Reply:It is a rill disease called Elephantitis. In 1985 Cher made a movie of about a mother who's son had the disease.Called Mask.
Reply:Yo momma! HAHA
Reply:it is caused by a parasite infestation called Wucheria Bancrofti. it is transmitted via a vector - mosquitoes in the tropical areas.

the clinical symptoms are that the worm blocks the lymph flow in the body. this causes the abnormal drainage of lymph to the nodes and oedema occurs. it is usually in the leg and scrotum. i saw a picture of a guy whose scrotum was so big due to the oedema, that when he stood in an upright position, the scrotum rested on the ground.

one cannot get rid of the adult worm, only of the larvae with meds, thats why it is a feared type of infestation and thats why they have these large limbs.

there are only prevention - tabbard and peaceful sleep.
Reply:Yes, the elephant man was a real person. He, and other like him, suffer from elephantiasis. The disease is caused by a problem with the lymphatic system.
Reply:The Elephant Man with William Hurt was based on a true story.

.I would like to know if I need to dig my elephant ear up.They are so big there pulling out of the ground.?

I live in Poplar Bluff, Mo. and I have some elephant ear that the leaves are from four feet to five feet tall. Steams are at least six feet tall. They are pulling out from the ground. I just wanted to know if it would be best to remove for the winter and replant next year. I need to know for sure that you remove them after the ferost. These ekephant ears are the biggest ones I've had in years and don't want to lose them. I sure do hope you can help me. Thank you!!!

.I would like to know if I need to dig my elephant ear up.They are so big there pulling out of the ground.?
I have always dug mine up. they produce more 'bulbs' and you can separate them and space them better each year you plant them. like the others said- keep them in a dry place. after mine are dry i put them in a potato sack, the mesh kind and hang them in the laundry room until i get ready to plant next year. i have also grown them in a large container in the house all year round. :-)
Reply:What in the world is this? Is this a tree? Or What?
Reply:If they've been "happy" year after year, then leave them alone. If they are new and seem crowded, then remove them after the frost so that they will be dormant when their location is changed.
Reply:You can divide them and give them to friends or move some to another location. They are so pretty and expensive to buy. My aunt is going to divide hers and I am on the list to get a clump yeah.
Reply:If you live in an area that gets frost they definitelyneed to be dug up after teh first frost. Dig them out of the groung and put them in a cool dark place to dry for a few days. Then pack them in vermiculite for the winter.
Reply:They'll be fine where they are. If you look around the base of the plants you will see "runners" that can be pulled or cut and potted to be taken indoors if you want to be absolutely sure they survive the winter. They'll even grow in water and nothing more. I've got a gazillion E ears, three different varieties.
Reply:i've seen them come back year after year, Cut them back after the first frost
Reply:YES...you need to dig them up and store them where they will not freeze. Your winter is too cold for them. You can bury them in a bucket with some peat moss or something like that. Keep them dark and dry.
Reply:dig it up that plant will die in cold whether and put it in a warm place maybe your home or car port if it`s warm or put in building in wheel barrel with a heater near and check on it each day hope i helped

In Mammals, the asian elephant is second, but man has the longest what?

I don't know the answer to this quiz question, any ideas?

I found the asian elephant has a finger, it also has nails on the feet but my best guess so far is the intestine.

Any other suggestions?

In Mammals, the asian elephant is second, but man has the longest what?
Memory
Reply:Longest trunk
Reply:Well elephants are noted for having a long memory but perhaps a man has a longer memory.
Reply:Life-span??
Reply:Is it the longest pregnancy? The Asian elephant has the longest pregnancy of all mammals with a gestation period of 22 months.
Reply:It is most likely memory. Humans actually do not have the longest life span- there are several species of parrots, tortoises, and whales that live far longer. Female killer whales tend to live around 95 to 105 years(on average).
Reply:Don't know the answer to this one but - For those that said Lifespan - wrong - the Blue Whale is a mammal and can live for up to 150 years - fishermen killed one a few weeks ago and there was a harpoon still in it dating back to 1850ish !!

As for Memory - how the hell can you test how long an elephant can remember for (Duh !)
Reply:well, if they are comparing it to me, then the answer is Penis!
Reply:Lifespan
Reply:OK..That is quite a tricky question. In mammals, the Asian Elephant (specifically referring to the Sumatran Elephant subspecies) is considered as the SECOND SMALLEST SUBSPECIES. However, with "man has the longest" the question most likely refers to another thing and subspecies cannot be the answer.

The next closest answer is the MAXIMUM LIFESPAN. So far on the lists of recorded maximum lifespan of mammals, MAN has the THE LONGEST, and ELEPHANTS (not specifically Asian elephants) comes SECOND. However, since BOWHEAD WHALES are also mammals, the above answer will become void. MAXIMUM LIFE SPAN can therefore be considered as the answer if the question specifically asks about TERRESTIAL MAMMALS and not just mammals.

Elephant feet is moving out!?

I know this isn't really a question, but I need to share my joy! My upstairs neighbor, who I call Elephant Feet, is loudly moving out today! I see the moving truck! No more stomping around and dancing in the mornings! He always uses both working washing machines too, no more of that! No more random crashes and bangs on the ceiling at 4 in the morning! HURRAY!

But to make this a valid question, what are your stories of annoying neighbors?

Elephant feet is moving out!?
Good for you !!! Don't really start celebrating till a 95 year old 90 lb orphaned spinster moves in above you .... You might be in for worse than ol Elephant feet !

My dear ( beeotch) neighbor above me is pot head who does not work ... and runs a after school/weekend/ Holiday day care business above my head ! I have complained to everyone but the mayor and I cant get it to stop ! I own ... she rents but apparently has more rights than me ???
Reply:Mine is very similar to yours. The girl upstairs has an "elephant footed" boyfriend. He steps so hard that our lights shake! They also have the annoying tendency to drop things on the floor and make a lot of noise early in the morning. Congratulations, I wish my neighbors would move out.
Reply:I have been blessed with quiet neighbors almost always, but I remember one who always used to keep her door open while using the vacuum...???
Reply:Oh please! Tell me the secret. I have the same problem.

I am asked to design a footwear for an elephant visiting the arctic.?

I need to know...

1. How big elephants' feet are? (average not excact)

2. Their average weight in newtons?

3. Surface area?

pls pls help me on this one. It's really hard.

xxx

I am asked to design a footwear for an elephant visiting the arctic.?
African Elephant: 7000 - 15000lbs

Asian Elephant: 6000-11000lbs

An elephant foot is roughly circular and the circumference is approximately one-half that of the shoulder height of the animal.

African Elephant: 8-13' tall (at shoulder)

Asian Elephant: 8-11' tall (at shoulder)

Keep in mind that the numbers I gave you are the average ranges.
Reply:Hello. You know the best way to get this answer? It is to do a search on each question. They look so cute in footwear as i am in Australia and live really close to the Australia zoo and they made shoes for there elephants so you could email them and ask them as well. Steve Irwin Zoo. Hopes this helps. Good luck and let me know how it goes as i love hearing about all this kind of stuff. Take care.

P.S. I think the best place to ask is the Australia zoo as they have done all this before and will ring and help you if you need them too. They are very helpful.

Have you heard of the story of the blind men asked to describe an elephant?

Have you heard of the story of the blind men asked to describe an elephant? One was holding the tail, one the trunk, the next a foot, and the last an ear. You can imagine the resulting descriptions of an elephant. Some things in life are mysterious until you can put the pieces together. Has writing been mysterious for you? How do sentences and paragraphs fit together smoothly to form essays? What are the most useful transitions for you? Is there a purpose for transitions? Some people think that transitions are devices or bridges. What would these blind men think about transitions if they could see?

Have you heard of the story of the blind men asked to describe an elephant?
I don't think that the blind man and the elephant is a good analogy for transitions in writing.

Too many questions-are we doing your homework??

Has writing been mysterious for you? No. I grew up reading alot, and still read constantly. Reading is what teaches you to write. In fact, when I was a kid, i read the story of the blind men and the elephant (the poem by John Godfrey Saxe based on the Indian story.)

How do sentences and paragraphs fit together smoothly to form essays? They fit because form follows function; because the words work as bricks and mortar, because content flows, yet maintains enough variety and texture to be interesting; and because the author embeds the text begging the question, which drives the reader to continue.

What are the most useful transitions for you? The most useful transition is one I do not notice.

Is there a purpose for transitions? Of course. The writer is trying to tack another sentence in. But a transition won't work if the sentence doesn't fit. It's like forcing in a puzzle piece--even if you use a superglue transition, what is more important in the long run is CONTENT.

What would these blind men think about transitions if they could see? It is irrelevant. How can blind men SEE the whole?

In the poem, the blind men never do come to a conclusion. As a metaphor for your concept, this falls apart here.

Better that you have your students read sample paragraphs and then deconstruct.

This would be akin to letting your clueless blind men handle a small model, where they could grasp the idea of "elephant" as a complete entity first.

Their problem was not transitions. It was being unable to grasp the whole.

A paragraph is more like a chain. Something which lacks cohesive content (or needs a transition that isn't there) is the weak link.
Reply:No. No. Each word has its own meaning, and they work together to create an idea or thought. So. Yes. That they help traverse one idea to another.
Reply:I think the blind men would think transitions are necessary and cool stuff in writing... just as we all do. Don't know why they would think differently if given a whole sentence, huh? Just like we get?
Reply:Yes; and it is a very informative metaphor for social understanding. What it has to do with "transition", I have no idea. As for "writing", per se, if your train of thought is not sound, you will de-rail.

What are elephant feet called?

Any answers welcome. To solve an argument between me and a friend.

What are elephant feet called?
They're just called feet.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephant#Le...

They're constantly referred to as feet and nothing else.

Edit:

In response to you calling it a hoof, hoofs are only on ungulate mammals. I'm afraid an elephant is not an ungulate mammal.
Reply:FEET!
Reply:im not sure accually, what did you and your friend say?

If a rabbits foot is lucky, then wouldn't you have 90% more luck if you have the whole rabbit on a chain?

What about a elephant foot on a key ring, dolphin flipper, monkey tail, platypus beak, crane leg?? What else can you think of?

If a rabbits foot is lucky, then wouldn't you have 90% more luck if you have the whole rabbit on a chain?
I once dated a girl who had a rabbit's foot-her other foot was normal.
Reply:lol sorry but this is funny to me. That is true you might as well put the whole rabbit on a chain lol.
Reply:They say that........ The rabbit must be shot dead in a graveyard at midnight for it to be lucky. Sounds like rubbish.
Reply:I don't believe in luck or lucky charms. Think about it--what's the point of carrying around a rabbit's foot. It didn't do the rabbit any good.
Reply:no, then rabbit would have all the luck

I need information about the proper cultivation of the elephant's foot plant, Dioscorea elephantipes?

A couple of years ago, I purchased a large (11 inch diameter) Dioscorea elephantipes caudex %26amp; placed it on top of some well-draining potting medium in a shallow-based pot. I put it out on the sun deck in May and by July several vines came growing out, which I supported with a 3 foot trellis. The plant stays out side on the sun deck during the warm months

(I live in Virginia, USA) and stays in my classroom in a sunny, east-facing window the rest of the year. I have read that the plant has a natural, dry domancy period in nature, but my plant's vine stayed green and growing for the last 2 years, not showing any sign of going dormant, so I kept watering it. Perhaps I should have forced it into dormancy, but I didn't know how to proceed, so I didn't. Now the viney top has died back of its own accord. The roots still keep the caudex firmly attached to the soil and I am pretty sure that it still alive and just dormant. So what do I do now? Stop watering until new growth appears?

I need information about the proper cultivation of the elephant's foot plant, Dioscorea elephantipes?
I would ask this question on www.davesgarden.com See if you have luck there

If I dropped a live adult elephant from 1000 feet up onto 10-foot-thick pavement, what would happen?

Would there be visible guts?

If I dropped a live adult elephant from 1000 feet up onto 10-foot-thick pavement, what would happen?
PETA would have you executed.
Reply:it would bounce. or maybe SPLAT!
Reply:There would be a big splat......
Reply:You'd have a dead elephant or at least one that is pissed off...
Reply:You got a lot of work to do.

If you are actually able to do this, the pavement breaks and you go to jail for killing an elephant and also end up paying up for the broken pavement. So please don't try this at home or anywhere.
Reply:You would be arrested for animal cruelty
Reply:Yes. A big pile of something that couldn't be IDed. the concrete would win and not have a scratch. I wouldn't mind seeing that.
Reply:Why would you want to do this in the first place?
Reply:I think you should do that with yourself first, just to test the experiment...
Reply:yes there would be guts it would go splat
Reply:splat.
Reply:Guess it depends on if it has a parachute or not.

But if it didn't I'm willing to bet the elephant would be pretty pissed off.

Guess it depends on where it lands, if on it's head, then probs guts, if on it's back, it might just be a pulp

Anyone know which has the bigger foot size, an elephant or a polar bear?

This is a pub argument that's gone on too long. I'm set to lose a pint if I'm wrong. No guesses please.

Anyone know which has the bigger foot size, an elephant or a polar bear?
The African elephant is the world's largest land animal. On average adults weigh from 4,000 to 7,000 kg. (8,820 – 15,430 lb.) and stand 3 to 4 metres (10 – 13 ft.) high at the shoulder (1). so i would have to say the Elephant would have larger feet than a polar bear

An bull African elephant's foot is 18.5 inches by 20.8 inches.

A polar bear's foot is 12 inches by 10 inches.

These aren't averages, but there you go. I'd have guessed wrong. :P

Reply:Mr/Ms "imayger" is totally correct..... I agree with what he said.....
Reply:Actually it's none of the above. It's a rare animal called a Slazenger that lives in the Himalaya mountains that feeds solely on Yak milk %26amp; produces turquoise wallpaper for a living.

Where can I find the elephant clock featured in the weekend's 'home' section of the guardian?

I saw a lovely large clock in the guardian weekend magazine which was pink/purple and round with a small elephant's trunk and tiny elephant feet. It cost about £70 and I have been trying in vain to find it on the internet...having helpfully recycled the magazine with all the info. in it! If anyone could help it would be much appreciated!

Where can I find the elephant clock featured in the weekend's 'home' section of the guardian?
Try this search :Elihu the Elephant by George Nelson.

It could be the one you are looking for.

It is really cute.

I dreamed of seeing an elephant ruthlessly beat some human. What is the meaning of this dream?

In my dream I saw an angry elephant ruthlessly beat a man. I saw the man very badly being swung in the trunks and being tossed repeatedly. The man also get crushed under elephant foot several times.

Why such a horribly violent dream did i get?

I dreamed of seeing an elephant ruthlessly beat some human. What is the meaning of this dream?
Some kind of strong element in your life is troubling ur near and dear one repeatedly and u are fed up of it but can do nothing to help it.Atleast ur consideration for the person predicts this.
Reply:Well, was the man or you crying? If so, that means that some sort of healing is happening in your life. You will sucsessfully overcome obstacles and move on.

If the man died that represents you may be worried . If you knew the man you may have wished to be more like him.

If the man was bleeding it reflects things that you are passionate about, even if they have been a big dissopointment.

Hope this helps.

How big is an elephant foot?

An elephant's legs are great straight pillars, as they must be to support its bulk. The elephant needs less muscular power to stand because of its straight legs and large pad like feet. For this reason an elephant can stand for very long periods of time without tiring. In fact, African elephants rarely lie down unless they are sick or wounded. Indian elephants, in contrast, lie down frequently.

The feet of an elephant are nearly round. African elephants have three nails on each hind foot, and four on each front foot. Indian elephants have four nails on each hind foot and five on each front foot. Beneath the bones of the foot is a tough, gelatine-like material that acts as a cushion or shock absorber. Under the elephant's weight the foot swells, but it gets smaller when the weight is removed. An elephant can sink deep into mud, but can pull its legs out readily because its feet become smaller when they are lifted.

An elephant is a good swimmer and climber, but it can neither trot, jump, nor gallop. It does have two gaits: a walk, and a faster gait that shares characteristics with running. In walking the legs act as pendulums, with the hips and shoulders rising and then falling while the foot is planted on the ground. The faster gait does not meet the usual definition of running, as elephants always have at least one foot on the ground. However an elephant moving fast uses its legs like a running animal does, with the hips and shoulders falling and then rising while the feet are on the ground. In this gait an elephant will have three feet off the ground at one time. As both of the hind feet and both of the front feet are off the ground at the same time, this gait has been likened to the hind legs and the front legs taking turns running

How big is an elephant foot?
smaller than you
Reply:very big, hehe.

What is the average size and area of an elephant's foot?

All elephants do not have the same number of toes on each foot. The African elephants have four toes on their front feet and three toes on their back feet. Asian elephants on the other hand, have five on the front and four at the back. Elephants toes are buried inside of the flesh of the foot and not all toes have toenails. An elephants foot generally measures 40-50cm in length and width and has a circumference of about 1.34m.

What is the average size and area of an elephant's foot?
They wear a size 18 like Shaquille O'Neil.
