Estimate the pressure exerted on a floor by the following.
(a) one pointed chair leg (49 kg on all four legs) of area = 0.06 cm^2
___________ N/m^2
(b) a 1770 kg elephant standing on one foot (area = 850 cm^2)
___________ N/m^2
Shouldn't it just be P=F/A...
and you would find F by multiplying the mass by gravity and deviding by the given area on m^2?
I did this and it was wrong! Please Help!
Please help! Estimate the pressure exerted on a floor by the following.?
(a)
49 / 4 kg supported on each leg of area
0.06cm^2 = 6 * 10^(-4) m^2.
Pressure from one leg is:
( 49 * 9.81 ) / ( 4 * 6 * 10^(-4) )
= 2.00 * 10^5 N / m^2.
(b)
(1770 * 9.81) / (850 * 10^(-4))
= 2.04 * 10^5 N / m^2.
What you have said seems to be right. Have you got the conversion factor right for cm^2 to m^2? It's10^(-4) for squared units (not 10^(-2) as for linear units).
